California African American Museum · 600 State Dr, Exposition Park

Three shows running right now, and two of them are worth the whole afternoon: The Sound of Gordon Parks — his photographs next to the music side of him almost nobody knows about — and A New Song: Langston Hughes in the West.

freeseven acres
No driving, no second address. It shares the park with the museum — out the doors and across the lawn. Sixteen thousand rose bushes and a fountain, and in August the whole place smells like it’s showing off.
Not a stop, exactly. However long it holds us on the way to the car.
Simpang Venice · 705 Lincoln Blvd, Venice
open till 9:30indonesiannatural wine
It started in 2002 as a tiny Indonesian grocery store in Palms. Two decades later it’s the one everybody in this city names first, and this is its second room — warm, low light, natural wine.
They pull teh tarik here, the Malaysian tea they throw between two pitchers until it foams. Apparently nobody else in Los Angeles bothers.
And they feed me properly, which is not a given: gado-gado, tahu tempeh, sayur bungkus. All plants, none of it apologising.
The drive from the museum is about half an hour, and it is one road most of the way — straight west into whatever the sun is doing.

One o’clock. See you there.
Built this myself, this afternoon. It updates on its own — the clock up top is live, so this page always knows what time it is even if I don't.
